Thanks to this management method and grazing system he markets veld meat at a premium directly to Cavalier (who supplies meat to Woolworths) according to their strict quality and production re- quirements.
Some of the lambs are sold to feedlots for the regular meat market.
Health, wool production and fertility in the ewes are important traits to Charles. “The wool the ewes produce is of a bet-
ter quality. Since we started using Byboost, there is no wool breakage. In stressful periods or if the ewe is sick or has a nutri- tional deficiency, the wool develops weak spots and stops growing. With Byboost I no longer see this wool breakage.
“At the last auction I delivered more than 7 tons of wool without a kilogram of wool breakage. I have furthermore compared the wool reports before and after I started using Byboost and the wool production itself is also more per sheep. This contributes to a better income from the wool.
“Byboost really made a big difference on my farm,” says Charles.
He adds that healthier sheep brings bet- ter and healthier products to the market, which means better profits for him.
DOSING
Charles doses his sheep from two to six weeks before the mating season begins
(end of November) and then again about six weeks before lambing. Lambs are do- sed shortly after birth in April and again during weaning time (September).
“Since using Byboost, my sheep cope much better with stress. In the beginning of December, we had a week of perpetual rain. For sheep this is not ideal weather. When the rams are already with the ewes and the mating season has started, we can- not afford to have ewes that are sick or lose condition.
“Byboost helps them through such times and supports fertility in the ewes and rams, who also gets dosed before the mating season. My pregnancy rate has been much better since using Byboost.
“We are very happy to have Mr Danie Smit, Bayer’s representative in the area, in our midst. He farms near Belfast and regularly visits our farm. He goes out of his way to help us and to supply sheep products, despite this area not being ty- pical sheep world.
