Judeo-Christian
—Divine Creation: Creation Ex-Nihilo— Creation Out of Nothing
Creation out of nothing, a pivotal Judeo-Christian theological reflection considerably influencing the Qur’an, begins with the Scriptures (II Macc.7:23, 28-29;38 also in Rom. 4:17,39 and Heb. 11:340). To summarize, “out of nothing” may signify:
II Maccabees 28-29
38 2 Maccabees 7:23. “Therefore the Creator of the world, who shaped the beginning of humankind and devised the origin of all things, will in his mercy give life and breath back to you again, since you now forget yourselves for the sake of his laws.” NSV tr.
“I beg you, my child, to look at the heaven and the earth and see everything that is in them, and recognize that God did not make them out of things that existed. And in the same way, the human race came into being.” (2 Maccabees 7:28-29) NRS tr.
“... and consider that God made them of things that were not; and so was mankind made likewise.” (2 Maccabees 7:28-29) KJV tr.
“...from things not existent” (2 Maccabees 7:28-29) Wolfson’s translation.
39 Rom. 4:17. “As it is written: ‘I have made you a father of many nations.’ (Gen. 17:5). He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.” NIV tr.
“As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations, before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.” KJV tr.
“ As it is written, for I have set thee father of many folks, before God to whom thou hast believed. The which God quickeneth dead men [The which quickeneth the dead], and calleth those things that be not, as those that be.” Wycliffe tr. from Bible Gateway.
40 Heb. 11:3. “By faith we understand that the worlds were made by God's Word [By faith we understand the worlds to be shaped, or made, by God's Word], that visible things were made of invisible things.” Wycliffe tr.
“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” KJV tr. “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” NIV tr.
