and “chaos” pre-exist in the Genesis’ Creation Myth; and “formless” or “pre-existent matter” prevails in the Saadia and Kalam narratives. These affirm self-existing matter exists before God pronounces His Spoken Word to bring the cosmos into being, and serves to affirm the Grecian posture that out of nothing, nothing comes to be (or creation ex-materia). Neither the Old Testament, nor the Qur’an, nor Saadia, nor Kalam thinkers are able to posit creation ex-nihilo with an ounce of certainty.

And as Alexandrian scholars translated “to create” from the Hebrew Scriptures to Greek in the Septuagint, no other term seemed more suitable than εποίηεν, “to produce:”80 etymology evocative of Greek “ποιεῖν,” “to create,” “to make,” evocative of Plato’s Demiourgos-ποιητην, whose many nuances, symbolic and semantic, sing of Ποίησις’ essence, as divine ecstasies from heavens’ breath. Yet, Philo of Alexandria would not only replace εποίηεν with κτιζειν, but also the LXX’s δημιουργεω (to mould,
