If it is true that I have not known anyone else but Rama, O Mother Earth, open out to me.”40
(O how our hearts open up to Sita and how King Rama reaps what he has sown!)
And Mother Earth opens out and daughter is given back to her, never to be brought back, never; never to be raised from the earth, never; she is gone from Rama’s life forever. All we hear is Rama’s unbearable roar bouncing from the Himalayas to the Andes, south so south that not even Demeter and her Eleusian Mysteries can answer him, for we do not know, we do not know when cherished Sita shall stir in us again 3⁄4 that blessed hour, how we await it, we await it.
