Charles Guard & Co, a Protestant Irishman, was established in 1867 in Montreal and opened to the public in May 1868. It became a hugely successful soft drink company. Charles Guard had great faith
in the new Dominion and he set out to show the world that within its borders could be procured ginger
ales, ginger beers, soda waters and other such beverages equal to any imported. He made his own beverages, bottled them himself and
sold them from his one horse delivery wagon - which expanded to one requiring 40 horses, massive expansion (many factory moves) to finally a completely motorized fleet.
L to R: The Gurd family and Charles Gurd himself!
