THE WORLDS ONLY TWO COLOURED CODD BOTTLE?
This particular bottle was dug from the once famous Harborough Hills tip, on the edge of Barnsley, which was for many years the stomping ground of so many local diggers. In many ways it was very much the foundation upon which my own collection was built. My very first attemtpt to sell involved hiring a stall at an early Barnsley Antiques Fair, travelling in by bus from Elsecar. I took my young son Paul (he was maybe 7 or 8) and we each had a rucksack me also with two packed suitases of bottles and pottery spares. I turned up late and was duly sent up flight of stairs, on my own, with a hand written poster MORE UPSTAIRS. By 12 noon we had sold everything - too cheap. Going home was easy - everything packed into the largest suitcase.
With my ill gotten gains I travelled to my first ever Bottle Show and with the cash in my pocket purchased a Mrs Ellen Hales Ointment pot lid, a blue
top Bevan of Neath ginger beer, and a Zara seal. From there small
acorns did grow... as well as this two coloured Greek codd.
