580. E J STEWART WEST HARTLEPOOL CODD BOTTLE. 7.4ins
tall, standard codd closure in a wonderful bright blue glass. Front embossed
with 4 lines of writing and the famous bluebottle or firefly pict. t.m. Two halves
professionally joined (believed by Simon Bennett?). Breffit & Co makers/
Castleford to rear bottom. Considered by many to be the best UK pictorial coloured codd & something of a ‘Holy
Grail’ item? NR £600-800+
E J Stewart was born in September 1875 in Hartlepool, his father a
master mariner.His 1898 marriage certificate records his profession as ‘Engineer.’On his daughters birth certficate in August 1899
his occupation became ‘Mineral Water Manufacturer’ but this
lasted for a very short time (somewhere between. Sept.
1898 to March 1901).
Apart from the few blue codd
remnants (3 types, 6 & 10oz) no other types of bottles have been found and there
is no trace of a trade mark application.
John Yule, in his excellent authoritative book ‘Nothing But The Blues’, describes E J Stewart as “a single obscure firm from West Hartlepool
on the North East coast of Durham....” who used “blue codds considered by many collectors as the most desirable blue glasse mineral water bottles in the country?
This bottle is Type 1 from Johns book featuring the word
‘Registered’ below the pictorial trade mark.
Only one complete 6oz example is recorded, dug in the 1970’s,
famously linked with Roy Morgan until 1988 then passed
to Peter Savage
582. WARWICK EARLY HAMILTON BOTTLE & STAND. 9ins tall total height when set in the stand (silver marked). Slightly darker aqua hue with square edged chisel lipheavily serif embossed ‘COURT/ WARWICK.’ Fabulous uncleaned bottle, tiny lip flake, some stainting to the stand.(9/10 & 8/10) (2) NR £150-200+
583. HANTS MINERAL WATER COMPANY ACME RELIANCE PATENT CODD BOTTLE. 9.4ins tall. How to describe the glass colour - pale browny amber with a hint of peach? Front features lettering within a buckled belt design & large bottle pict. to centre & to the rear a large Britannia pict.
in a single line border - Sole Maker Dan Rylends etc below. Small lip edge ‘egg’ (see close up pics on easyliveauction. com) & a few minor body marks & around the bottom curving edge, overall good, nay fabulous sheen. A truly spectacular ‘looker’, very rare. (8+/10) NR £600-800+
581. BLACK GLASS PONTILLED HAMILTON BOTTLE. 7.5ins long. Absolutely delightful early black/ very dark green glass, lovely blobby rolled lip. Cross hinge with smoothed base pontil. Very minor wear/
inmanufacture marks but really
a tip top. (9.5/10) NR £150- 200+
