news for our community. Their vision to shelter people goes beyond glamping as they try to solve and help the world’s housing crisis. Through their design, easy transportation and setup, Jupe will help millions who are displaced and looking for affordable and easy housing solutions. We could not be prouder to have been chosen and associated with such a forward-thinking company,” stated Leonard.
SOIL REGENERATION PROGRAM & EDIBLE FOREST
After a delay because of COVID, the Soil Regeneration Program started this year with famed Soil Ecologist, Vivian Kaloxilos, founder of Docterre, which is a soil ecology consulting and laboratory that supports the regeneration of soil ecosystems. Along with her team, she will be showing Hammond how to use their compost to trans- form it into giant teas (resembles giant tea bags) that get dropped in water, creating liquid fertilizer, that then get applied to their greens throughout the golf season creating healthier soil. “This will help ‘correct’ the soil from past overuse of chemicals,” says Leonard. Docterre will also help with them to get their vermicomposting project underway working with the kitchen.
Next up was the Edible Forest. Working with the Co-op Arbre Évolution, Hammond has designed and chosen an open area near the clubhouse to plant numerous fruit trees, fiddleheads, mushrooms, beehives, including a market garden for produce for freshness and to reduce transportation needs. Workshops this fall will even be given to show people and businesses how they can recreate these types of projects that work naturally together to cross- pollinate.
LGBTTQ+ & COMMUNITY INITIATIVES
Leonard being gay is also a refresh- ing piece of the puzzle as Hammond promotes hiring all staff no matter sexual preference, has openly trans- gender staff and frequently hold events supporting the LGBTTQ+ community, including a Drag Bingo Show, Around the Rainbow Night fundraiser, supporting the commu- nity-based program providing education, counselling and support services in Ottawa.
Leonard and the Hammond Team also support various other community initiatives such as Clothing Drives for Hands of Hope to support women struggling to provide essentials, Food Drives for Local Food Banks for families affected by the Pandemic, hosting local area Ecological and Environ- mental meetings, hosting Christ- mas Craft Sales to support small local vendors, and just recently a charity event to raise funds for two
