Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80, which called for a day of commemoration. The TRC emphasized the importance of education, awareness, and the acknowledgment of Indigenous peoples’ histories and Treaty and Indigenous-Crown relationships. As a result, land acknowledgements started to become more prevalent, serving as a step towards honoring Indigenous presence and fostering a culture of respect and reconciliation.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
A land acknowledgement is a formal statement that recognizes and respects the Indigenous peoples as traditional caretakers of the land on which an event or activity is taking place. The goal is to honour their enduring connection to the land and acknowledge impacts of colonialism. Land acknowledgements are often delivered at the beginning of public events, in written documents, or on websites to remind us of historical and ongoing relationship that Indigenous communities have with their territories, Treaty lands, and homelands.
