The Return to Normal
After a busy two seasons, the “COVID”
golf boom is starting to subside. However, all indications are that rounds of golf across the country remain higher compared to pre- COVID rounds, which is great to see. Hopefully, the trend continues and golf is able to retain the new golfers who were finding something to do and the former players returning to the sport. A consistent level of partici- pation somewhere in the middle of pre-COVID rounds and the rounds played over the last two years would be optimal for golfers and turf crews.
In June, I had the honour of pre- senting Ian McQueen, Superintendent at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, with his National Tournament series recognition plaque for hosting the RBC Canadian Open. Presentations of this nature are part of CGSA efforts to promote and support the golf course Superintendent and profession. Ian and his staff met the challenge of hosting a PGA Tour event and the golf course conditioning and presentation was outstanding.
As I write this, most courses across the country are approaching the mid-point of the season. Any
newly hired seasonal staff are finding their way and as a result things are running smoothly. Unfortunately, before we know it, we will be planning our preparations for fall and winter.
Our season, while short in many areas of the country, often seems long. It is important we take the time to look after ourselves as well as the golf courses we care for. Taking a few days here and there is important for our wellbeing as we continue into the second half of the season. We all know that as staff starts to return to school and our crews become smaller, taking time away becomes more difficult, so do it now.
On September 20th, Dustin How, AGS, along with Southwood Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba, will play host to the 2022 Fall Field Day. We will be returning to our traditional one venue Fall Field Day this year. The MGSA will be hosting an event welcoming guests to Manitoba on the Sunday evening the week of the tournament. The entire event is sure to be great and one the CGSA Board and staff are looking forward to hosting! GM
