ACCIDENTS HAPPEN:
WHAT TO DO AND WHEN
TO REPORT AN INCIDENT
In the event of an incident, taking swift and appropriate action is crucial. First and foremost, prioritize medical assistance if there are any injuries. Once that is done, your next step should be to secure the area to prevent further incidents and preserve the scene.
Documentation is key; do this immediately, ensuring you capture details with video, as it can be crucial evidence later on. Gather statements from any witnesses as their accounts may provide valuable insights into what occurred. This is especially critical, in case it is needed years later for legal purposes. Concurrently, reach out to the necessary professionals, such as insurers, lawyers, and
your direct superiors, to report the incident and seek their guidance.
Throughout this process, remember to approach the situation with both empathy and compassion, as those involved may be dealing with shock or distress. These steps can help manage the situation effectively, ensuring safety and proper handling of the event.
When an incident occurs, there are specific circumstances under which it must be reported to local safety authorities within a 72-hour timeframe. This is mandatory if a first aid attendant advises an employee to seek further medical treatment or if the injury they sustained requires such treatment. Additionally, if the worker receives medical treatment because of the injury, or if they are unable
to resume work beyond the day the injury occurred, reporting is required.
It is also necessary to report incidents that result in, or are alleged to have resulted in, damage to an artificial limb, eyeglasses, dentures, or hearing aids. Finally, if either the employee or the Worker’s Compensation Board (such as WorkSafe or WSIB) insists on the submission of an employer’s report regarding the incident, adherence to the 72-hour reporting rule is compulsory.
If your workplace is scheduled for a safety inspection, it is essential to prepare for a thorough review of your safety practices and documentation. The inspector will request to see all relevant documents and manuals that outline the safety protocols
