a severe thunderstorm with wind speeds reaching 130 km/hr, and unfortunately damaged Falcon Ridge Golf Course as it followed a straight-line path thru 5 holes. Numerous trees were knocked down on the fairways and tree limbs torn off and strewn across the course, with Hole # 18 getting hit the worst. Afterwards, the Northern Tornadoes Project found the main path of tornado damage ran for about six kms with a maximum width of 130m.
Steve Spratt, NGCOA Canada Past President and Owner of Falcon Ridge Golf Course confirmed that “fortunately there were no injuries on site, as there was lots of warnings from our staff well in advance and golfers received amber alerts on their phones of incoming tornado warnings in area. Almost all golfers were off the course when it actually struck. That said, we were
very lucky it wasn’t 300 yards to the south as it would have hit our clubhouse where golfers that left the course and staff were taking shelter.”
“Course clean-up was done by staff and a few volunteers, and we were able to use all our own equipment. So, we were very fortunate that the actual cost for clean-up was simply the staffing cost which was directed away from regular duties and focused on the damaged area,” continued Spratt. “At the end of the day, we were thankful no golfers or staff were injured, as that is what is most important!”
SEVERE FLOODING & RAINSTORMS
As you know in managing your golf course operation where precision and careful planning is paramount, the arrival of extreme
flooding and unrelenting rain poses a formidable challenge.
On July 22nd, Nova Scotia received an incredible 250 mm of rain in a 24-hour period. The rainfall caused flooding across the Halifax region; tragically four people were killed; homes destroyed and numerous businesses were severely impacted. NS’s River Oaks Golf Course saw extensive flooding on their property and damage to the golf course.
“The forecast called for heavy rain, about 80 mm over the day. We anticipated some water would remain on the course, especially on our river holes so to prepare for it, we brought in course fixtures, garbage cans, etc. We were not too worried, as the river was 8-10 feet below its banks and we thought we would have no problems,” explained Graeme Burke, GM, River Oaks Golf Club.
