HONOURABLE MENTIONS
“Bridal Ambassadors” by Eric Kirkpatrick, Pine Knot Golf & Country Club, Dorchester, ON (2015)
Pine Knot G&CC was looking to increase wedding bookings in future years. Word of mouth is definitely the best form, but also the slowest form of advertis- ing. In an effort to expedite the results and try a new idea at an upcoming bridal show, they invited a few brides to appear in their booth at upcoming bridal shows. The brides’ wedding pictures were promi- nently displayed and they wore special t-shirts that read, “I tied the Knot at Pine Knot” with their name and wedding date on them. Future brides loved it!
”Cost Savings by Changing to a Zamboni Fairway Cut” by Brian Schaal, Copper Point Golf Club, Invermere, BC (2015)
Copper Point Golf Club introduced a Zamboni cut to all the fairways. With the traditional diagonal/width cut, every time the machinery approaches the second cut (rough), the reels have to be lifted, the machine has to be turned around and the reels lowered to con- tinue the cut.
With the Zamboni cut, the reels never leave the fairway, as you start in the middle of the fairway and do a clean-up lap at the end! The operator drives the machine along the length of the fairway, mowing strips from the tee to the green and from the green to the tee. In one year they have saved 270 hours in labour, over $2,000 in fuel and reduced their repairs to equipment by 10%.
”Princess Tees” by Kathy Mackay, formerly of Ainsdale Golf Club, Kincardine, ON (2014)
In an effort to attract female golfers with little or no golf experience to join the weekly Ladies League, Ainsdale Golf Club decided to add a new Flight called the “Fun” Flight. The Ladies would play weekly in groups of three and a special set of tee blocks would be placed on the fairway called the Princess Tees. These tee blocks are placed forward at the distance of a good ladies drive from “A” Flight with weekly prizes set aside just for this flight.
”Redneck Men’s Night at the Canadian” by Lee Tamburano, Canadian Golf & Country Club, Ottawa, ON (2014)
Canadian Golf & Country Club wanted a concept that would spice things up and draw attention to their Men’s Night in order to bring in new members and sponsors. Redneck Night is held once a year and the concept is to have a night where golf is played - but more importantly - the Men’s Night members can really cut loose and go wild!
Key elements included: golf attire not permitted; bring your own vehicle instead of using one of our golf carts (including ATVs, 4 wheelers, riding lawnmowers, motorcycles and trench-diggers); and creating an alternative to their normal layout that was extra- challenging and a lot of fun.
