All of a sudden the conversa- tion changes: People are speak- ing about how many calories they burn playing golf. Not how many courses are closing. They are asking their friends better questions, like “Did you know golfers live five years longer?”
When the story changes, when the conversation changes, when the questions change, the answers change. Golf becomes top of mind; there is a more emotional response and the desire to play golf increases. From those who play, those who used to play and those who have never yet played!
CONTENT MARKETING
Pretty much every major company in the world is now using content marketing as a major part of their marketing plan. It has always been my most effective form of marketing.
So, what is content marketing? It is providing readers, viewers, and listeners with high quality information such as: a golf instruction video on YouTube, a downloadable PDF guide on how to plan the perfect wedding, a blog article on great places to play in Scotland off the beaten path.
It could be an audio seminar or podcast or it might be something fun like a picture with a short message or info graphic on the history of golf. It might be a Pinterest board with pictures of all the latest golf fashions or a board of golf cartoons. All of these constitute content marketing.
Unfortunately, many people do not see the connection from being the thought leader and providing a wide range of information and entertainment that digs deeper into the golf lifestyle rather than simply bombarding your email list with discount tee time offers, but the benefits are real and tangible, such as more readership or viewership since the message is not a sales
