is not fit. We believe in motivating people and we go on evaluating people who can contribute to the cause of business and we try to promote them adequately. Our normal environment is like family. We motivate and ensure them that it is their organisation.” So the normal attrition rate of any industry is balanced out by long- term employees who have been in growth roles with Kusumgar Corporates almost their entire lives.
A family member remembers the time when an employee was caught stealing. YKK did not fire the man. He simply took the money back and had a quiet conversation with him a day later gently probing what had prompted him to commit the theft. This humanitarian engagement led to a change of heart and that man is working at Kusumgar Corporates to this day.
YKK is still very enthused about the products the company innovates, although his son Siddharth handles
the daily operations. However, there
is no step of it that he does not know.
His mind still visualises the life-time
and use of every product developed. A conversation with him results in a picture being painted that is complete. Not
only does he see the tip of the ice-berg, he knows how deep it goes, the rate at which it is floating, the speed with which it will melt and the number of marine species that live around it. His knowledge is therefore complete and the way in which he communicates it makes him
a great favourite, not just with others in the industry but also his grandchildren – to whom he delivers his learnings in a contextual and modern way.

A career like YKK necessarily involves commitment and concentration. But he
is no workaholic without time for family and friends. One Sunday a month, the entire family of four generations meets. There is close to 80 per cent voluntary attendance and it’s not just the bonhomie stirred up by each other’s company. Sundays are when YKK exercises his other great love: food and cooking. Again, his immersion in everything he does plays out here. When bhel is on the menu,
for instance, he knows exactly how each member of his family likes to have it and that is how he serves them. He knows who wants how much lime, chilli, sweet and so on.
His family adores their senior-most member’s investment in them not just in terms of money but time, effort, love, and discipline. The stories about him are legend in the family and consistent.
