Selby Shield Triumph Books Cup Promotion

Selby produced their best form to win rugby union’s Heineken Yorkshire Shield beating Beverley 32-18 in an entertaining final staged before a good crowd at Clifton Park, York, on Saturday.
Commitment from both sides was total and if Selby had played like this all season they would not have finished close to the bottom of North East Division 1.
In a repeat of 1981, the victory means that Selby have won their way back into the Yorkshire Cup at the first time of asking after being relegated from the more senior tournament last year.
Selby skipper Ray Adamson masterminded his side’s convincing triumph helping to draw first blood in the 17th minute when his well-timed pass released fullback Martin Bramley, who in turn sent winger Neil Smith over for an unconverted try.
Four minutes later it was Selby’s turn to soak up pressure from the lower ranked North East Two club, a dangerous raid to Selby’s line being stopped by a handling mistake.
Beverley continued to press and they drew level when skipper Steve Girking finished off a classy three-quarters move from a tap penalty, dummying over for an unconverted try.
Girking struck again with a penalty in the 30th minute to give the East Yorkshire side an 8-5 half-time lead.
But in the second half Selby took complete control crossing for tries through prop forward Jamie Pocklington, winger Andy Holmes, centre Andy Bennett and Smith’s second try, in the 75th minute. Adamson converted two and added a penalty goal.
Girking had reduced the arrears to 17-11 in the 55th minute with a penalty, No. 8 Tim Walker scoring a consolation try, converted by Girking, two minutes into injury time.
