JUNIOR RUGBY ROUND UP
COLTS - ED REID
Colts - Ed Reid
The Colts squad was made up of a healthy mix of U18s and U17s, who gelled together well as a group of young adults. Gelling on the pitch often proved harder given competing demands for the time of many of the squad, so throughout the season we never achieved a truly consistent team. Various opposing teams clearly also had difficulties with squad numbers as a number of matches almost didn’t take place, but thanks to the tenacity of the coaches and the willingness of the players to swap positions, we made most matches happen.
The league season itself started with three tough fixtures; losses away at Hull and Sheffield, then a visit from a strong Malton team who won easily.
A much needed home win against Wath restored some confidence. Unsurprisingly, this was the first time many of the first pick players had all been available, and they played a great game. The highlights were representative of many great moments through the season; terrific tackling from Ramskill, Sudron and Whitehead, powerful running from Elcock and Daniels up front, super leadership from captain Sandham, and the backs freed up by Bramley at half back to use their natural pace, with Perrin, Morris, Dennis and Reid all firing on all cylinders.
Two more wins followed, against Scunthorpe and Hull (sweet revenge following the nail biting loss of the first weekend). Malton and Doncaster proved too good, and at the end of the curtailed season, Selby finished a creditable 4th in the league.
Let’s hope this great group of lads all continue to play rugby, because they’ll all be a credit to the club and the game.
