CHIPPENDALE LOWBOY
Philadelphia Circa 1770
Possibly made by Thomas Affleck (1740-1795)
Primary Wood: Walnut Secondary Woods: Tulip Poplar, Atlantic White Cedar, Yellow Pine
Height: 29 5/8 inches Width: 35 inches Depth: 21 inches Provenance: Descended in the Hopkins Family of Pennsylvania and Maryland.
The similarities of design between this dressing table and one made by Affleck for Levi and Hannah Hollingsworth makes the Affleck attribution possible. Moreover, the applied shell and carved knees strongly relate to a chair from the same suite of furniture. See William McPherson Hornor, Jr., Blue Book - Philadelphia Furniture William Penn to George Washington, plates 136, 137 and 220.
