 Ispent most of my early teen years in silverlake and down Sunset, stopping at Tacos Delta if we were hungry, or
Pazzo Gelato for ice cream when it was hot. To this day, one of my biggest regrets is never stepping inside Circus of Books.
With gaudy yellow and red-ribbon exterior paint, graffiti, and dusty windows—for a curious queer like myself—the color- ful storefront simultaneously beckoned and dissuaded me from entering. Had I known exactly what the store sold, produced,
at a friend’s house, just off Sunset Boulevard. It
was perched on a steep slope that overlooked the celebrated dance club, Los Globos. This was just before outside eyes, investors, and a new generation of eager transplants start- ed purveying homes, businesses, and plots of land to foment the Silver Lake that exists today. We’d spend weekends walking up
