'Twas thus the victim, on whose head
The garland shone-each grief beguiled, As brighter hopes their gl y shed-
In her pale beauty sweetly smiled.
3. She kiss'd her  ther's hand, which shook With pain above her bosom's swell,
She  x'd above her stead st look,
 nd, like the wounded dove, she  ll. 'Twere vain to tell the joy disclosed
In her dark eye-the triumph sweet, Ere yet the trembling lid had closed,
And her young heart had ceased to beat.
 . Then rose a wild and deep lament
From those who clasp'd her hand in death ; But he who_ madly o'er her bent,
Could he lament, could he  rget?
They wail'd by Galilee's dark strand, O'er Sion's hill and Jordan's water,
And many a year through Judah's land
They mourn'd the  te of Jephte's daughter. l\L S.
OCCUP  TIONS OF BEES.
--- So work the honey bees;
Creatures, that, by rule in nature, teach
The art of order to a peopled kingdom.
They have a king, and o cers of sorts,
Where some, like magistrates, correct at home; Others, like merchants, venture trade abroad, Others, like soldiers, armed in their stings,
Make boot upon the summer's velvet buds; Which pillage they, with merry march, bring home To the tent-royal of their emperor:
