Toledo is an ancient city a ut 40 mil from Madrid Ferdinand and I l had once made it their capital, and had built a great church there. The M lems had built a rt on one of Toledo's hill and Charles V later made the fort into a royal palace. The fort was known as the Alca r.

The Republican tr ps invaded the town. M ardo, his tr ps and me civilians retreated into the Alca r where they pre red to withstand the enemy. Altogether, 17 people were in the fort, including 211 children
