At the Army-McCa hy hearings in 1954, the Army's  wyer, J ph Welch, knew how to make McCarthy l k as bad as  ible. Welch dis­ tracted attention from the actual facts of Communist infiltration in t  Army to McCarthy's own per nality and the not always p dent way he handled inv ti tion  Added to this were the h tile television commen­ tators and newspa r stori  McCarthy never had a chance.

He died on May 2, 19 , the victim of an irrational ha­ tred which had not entirely di ppeared even twenty ye  later.
