THE WANDERINGS OF THE ISRA ITES 135
Down below they could see the camp of the Israelites. Sacri ces were o ered to Baal and then Balaam stood up to curse the Israelites. He said, "Balac, king of the Moabites, hath brought me here to curse Israel, but how shall I curse him whom God hath not cursed¥''
Balac was very angry at Balaam for not cursing the Israelites, but Balaam said, "Can I speak anything else except what the Lord commandethf''
Three times did Balaam try to curse the Israelites, and each time the curse was turned into a blessing. He said, "How beautiful are thy tabernacles, 0 acob, and thy tents, 0 Israel. As woody valleys, as watered gardens near rivers, as tabernacles which the Lord hath \ as cedars by the waterside. He that blesse ishall also be blessed; he that curseth thee, shall be cursed.''
Then Balac ordered Balaam to leave the land of Moab and to return to his own country. But Balaam prophesied before he left and said, '' A Star shall rise out of acob and a scepter shall spring up from Israel.
Out of acob shall He come that shall rule.''
