looked to Him for protection. They sought safety i their own strength or in treaties with earthly powers. Isaias prophesied to the people and told them not to fear their enemies, but to fear themselves. He told them to put their trust in God, Who had saved them in the past and would save them in the future. But he knew the people would not listen to him. They would follow their own ways and one day they would be car­
ried away into captivity and death.
But even if they are taken captive, God will deliver
them. First, an earthly king will set them free. This is Cyrus, the king of the Persians. Then later on will come the Great Deliverer Who will save the whole world. '' There shall come forth a rod out of the root
