280 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE IN CAPTIVITY

sang songs of joy.
Re ld- Some of the neighboring people, idolaters, o ered to   d help in the building of the Temple. They said that
they adored the God of Israel together with other gods. But the Jews would not allow these idolaters to take part in building the Temple to the true God, nn  this made them angry; They sent word to the king of Persia that the Jews were building the Temple as a fortress to resist him. The king believed this report, and he ordered the governor of Samaria to prevent the completion of the Temple.
The prophets Aggeus and Zacharias urged the peo­ ple to continue the building of the Temple. At last Darius I, who was now king of Persia, listened to the prayers of the Jews. He permitted them to  nish the building, and gave large sums in money and herds of
