That night the king was restless and could not sleep. He called in the historians of his empire and com­ manded them to read to him the history of his reign. As he listened to the reading, he heard again the story of how Mardochai had discovered the plot against his life. He asked if Mardochai had ever been rewarded for that loyal deed, and he was told that he had not.
