The wealthy people had chairs and couches made of ne cedar wood and beautifully carved. The common people had rough benches and tables made of pine. For beds the ews used a thin mattress with one or
ยท two coverings, which was laid on the oor. They also had little clay lamps in which olive oil was burned, kitchen utensils, bottles made of skins, pitchers and a hand mill for grinding corn.
1l1e rich ews had plates, knives, bowls, and cups made of gold; the poor had ston and clay vessels. The meals of the rich consisted of the foods brought by merchants from all parts of the Roman Empire. The poor ate mutton, sh, bread, and such fruits and vegetables as Palestine produced.
