GOD'S GREAT FAVORS TO JACOB .51 -
drank and went his way, and made little account of the fact that he had sold his birthright.
The years went by and Isaac grew old. His eyes J• were dim and he could not see. One day he called Isa's Esau and said to him, ''Thou seest that I am old and & know not the day of my death. Take thy arms, thy quiver and bow, and go abroad, and when thou hast taken something in the hunt, prepare for me a meal thereof as thou knowest I like it. Bring it, that I may
eat and my soul may bless thee before I die.''
Rebecca overheard this conversation and, after Esau had gone, she called Jacob and said to him, ''I heard thy father talking with Esau, thy brother, telling him to bring game from the hunt and make a meal for him, that he might bless him before he dies. Now, there fore, my son, follow my counsel. Bring me two of the
best kids from thy ock, that I may make of them a meal for thy father such as he gladly eateth. Thou shalt bring it in to him, so that when he hath eaten, he may bless thee before he dies.''
Jacob answered her, "Thou knowest that Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am smooth. If my father shall touch me, I fear that he will think that I am making fun of him and will call down upon me a ciuse instead of a blessing.''
Rebecca said, "Upon me be this curse, my son. Only hear thou my voice and go fetch me the things which I have said."
Jacob brought the kids to his mother, and she cooked a meal of them that she knew wouid please Isaac. She brought out Esau's best clothes and put them on Jacob.
