Here is another way to show steps leading to the solution:
x+_1 -_1 =-_3 -_1 4484
x = - _5 8
Solve.
x + _1 = - _3 48
SOLUTION
x + _1 = - _3 48
- _1 = - _1 __4 __4
x = - _5 8
On January 10, 1911, the temperature in Rapid City, South Dakota, fell 47°F in 15 minutes. What was the temperature at 7:00 a.m.?
SOLUTION
Let x = the temperature at 7:00 a.m. Write an equation.
x - 47 = 8
+47 = +47 To isolate the variable, add 47 to each side. __ __
x = 55
At 7:00 a.m. the temperature was 55°F.
State whether the value of each variable is a solution of the equation.
(Ex 1)
a. h - 14 = 2 for h = 12
b. -11 = j - 4 for j = -7
Solve. Then check the solution.
(Ex 2)
c. x-5=17
d. -30=m-12 Solve.
e. p + 3 = 37 (Ex 3)
f. -14=y+8 ( (Ex 3) ) _1 _1
g.d+4 =3 . (Ex 4) 26
h. Jagdeesh took the same test twice. On the second test he scored 87,
