New Concepts
A box-and-whisker plot displays data that are divided into four groups.
A line inside the box shows the median, the ends of the box show the quartiles, and the ends of the whiskers show the minimum and maximum values.
In 15 hockey games, 1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9 goals were scored. The number of goals scored can be displayed in a box-and-whisker plot.

Half of the games had between 3 to 8 goals per game. One-fourth of the games had between 1 and 3 goals per game. The median number of goals scored was 5.
The greatest number of goals scored in one game was 9.
The quartiles divide the data into fourths. The first quartile is the median of the lower half of the data, and the third quartile is the median of the upper half of the data.
