Identifying Correlations
State whether there is a positive correlation, a negative correlation, or no correlation between the data values.
a.
SOLUTION As the trend line rises from left to right, there is a positive correlation. Both sets of data values are increasing.
b.
SOLUTION Negative correlation: As x-values decrease the y = values increase.
c. height and shoe size
SOLUTION Positive correlation: Taller people tend to have larger feet.
d. date of birth and shoe size
SOLUTION No correlation: date of birth and shoe size are not related to
each other.
Matching Situations to Scatter Plots
