Adding and Subtracting Decimals
Example
1
a. Find the sum of 24.5 and 1.235.
SOLUTION
b. Find the difference of 36.762 and 4.2.
SOLUTION
24.5 + 1.235 24.500
36.762 - 4.2 36.762
Write the problem vertically.
+ 1.235 Align the decimal points. - 4.200
____ ____ 25.735 32.562
To multiply decimals, multiply first. Then place the decimal so that the product has the same number of decimal places as the total number of decimal places in the two factors. To divide decimals, multiply the divisor and the dividend by a power of 10 in order to make the divisor a natural number. Then divide as with whole numbers.
Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
