Surface Area of Prisms and Pyramids
Skills Bank Lesson 21
The surface area, S, is the total area of the two-dimensional surfaces that make up the figure.
Formulas for Surface Area of Prisms and Pyramids
Prism
S = 2B + Ph
B: area of base
P: perimeter of base h: height
Pyramid
S = B + _1Pl 2
B: area of base
P: perimeter of base l: slant height
Example
1
Finding the Surface Area of Prisms and Pyramids
Find the surface area of each figure.
a.
SOLUTION
S = 2B + Ph
= 2(4.2 · 6.8) + (22) · (9.6) = 2(28.56) + 211.2
= 57.12 + 211.2
= 268.32 m2
