This year, the UCP government’s Budget 2019 will freeze overall funding at $8.2 billion, equal to the former NDP government’s spending last year. It will continue at that same level for the next three years. This has led to major cost-cutting in school boards, who had expected additional funding to address an influx of students. As a result, school boards have cut budgets for infrastructure and transportation, dipping into other funds. Specifically, $1.8 billion from the provincial government will go into new school construction and modernization. However, much of that money is dedicated to previously announced projects. New school projects from 2019 to 2024 will receive only $328 million.
