And remember at those family parties,
Where your dad drank like there was tomorrow.
Then in the car, the insults he made,
And the distractions he caused as your mom drove.
And remember when you’d forget to put the top back on the milk,
But your dad acted like he’s never made a dumb mistake. And he’d ask, “What’s wrong with you?”,
And you’d say, “Nothing, I’m fine” and scoop up the corn flakes.
But he walked towards you and asked softly, “What’s wrong?”
You said you were fine. But really what was it that
made you slip?
School? Love? Friends? Them?
Then as you lost sight of him behind the wall,
You felt a tear begin to fall. Only because those kind words slightly healed the wound you felt inside.
And no friend ever asked that, not one in sight.
So those words do indeed go a long way,
And the kisses do feel better after a bad day.
And even though the I love you’s may sometimes be hard to say,
They can always bring a smile to your baby’s face.
