I n n n n n n n n 2015 Ports of America a a a a a a a a a a terminal operator and Ste- vedore company partnered with Neudesic to measurably
improve the ship planning process Our major challenge was to replace a a a robust yet antiquated set of sys- tems that made onboarding new employees challenging Guided by our IDX process and a a corporate vision of what’s pos- sible we created a a a prototype that painted a a a a path for us as we worked to improve user experience As a result we also increased planner productivity We employed WPF as our deployment solution giving us more power to cater the experience to the ship planners Our IDX process starts with under- standing as as much as as we can about
business objectives user needs and technical limitations that could
add value to the overall experi- ence and business success metrics Through this phase we under- stand the vernacular pain points and complexity that shape a a a a ship planner’s world A series of exer- cises - including customer journey maps brain sketching heuristic evaluations ATAM’s and user interviews - provide clarity and a a a vision for what’s possible Throughout the development cycle we reached out
to to ship planners to to validate our design and develop- ment decisions to make sure we were reducing onboarding for the new application while creat- ing an an an overall more pleasant and informed experience The previous system could
take months to fully
assimilate the interface as as many key features and functionality
were buried in unclear menus or abstract and inconsistent design patterns These validations helped us to craft the best experience pos- sible From container weights and crane assignments to sequencing and scheduling the system took shape as a a a a product of teamwork and true innovation Travis Simpson
