The mystery of the call
to discipleship is clearly expressed in these words of Jesus: “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you.” To be a disciple is to choose Jesus—and to recognize, with joy, that we have been chosen.

The Holy Spirit is given as an advocate, a defense attorney for each believer. The Spirit leads us into the truth, not all at once, but gradually, when we are ready to “bear it” (16:12). The Church teaches that the revelation of God
is complete, but that our understanding of God’s plan is not. “To bring about an ever deeper understanding of revelation the same Holy Spirit constantly brings
faith to completion by
His gifts” (Dei Verbum, 5). Faith must constantly seek understanding.

* [15:22, 24] Jesus’ words (spoken) and deeds (works) are the great motives of credibility. They have seen and hated: probably means that they have seen his works and still have hated; but the Greek can be read: “have seen both me and my Father and still have hated both me and my Father.” Works. . .that no one else ever did: so Yahweh in Dt 4:32–33.
