St. kateri tekakwitHa PariSH
St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish was created in 2010 from ve Irondequoit churches that formed a single community in honor of the rst Native American saint.
St. Kateri had converted to Catholicism in 1676 despite strong opposition from her Mohawk tribe. She was beati ed in 1980 by Pope John Paul II and
canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
When St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish was formed from Christ the King, St. Cecilia, St. Margaret Mary, St. Salome and St. Thomas the Apostle, the latter two churches ceased offering regular Sunday Masses and have gone on to serve the community in other ways. St. Thomas began celebrating Masses in Latin in the extraordinary form in 2014. After Bishop Salvatore R. Matano issued a 2016 decree that St. Salome could be used for wholesome activities, its building has been used for such purposes as community gatherings. The rectory, school and convent at St. Salome were razed in 2008 for the construction of senior housing.
St. Cecilia was founded in 1949, but the cornerstone for the church and school was laid on Nov. 22, 1950 – the feast of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Christ the King celebrated its rst Mass on Oct. 28, 1956, in part of a then-un nished structure that currently houses school classrooms. Parishioners sat in folding chairs on the concrete slab oor and knelt on mats. A year later, the church and school were dedicated on Oct. 27, 1957.
St. Margaret Mary was established June 14, 1928, and the current church building was constructed in 1949.
Among the ministries at St. Kateri are visitation to senior citizens and the homebound, a Good Samaritan transportation service, Stephen Ministry for parishioners in crisis and youth leadership formation.
St. Kateri School (formerly called Christ the King School), which opened in 1957, continues to offer Catholic education for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 6.
