CAPUCHIN FRANCISCANS OF THE PROVINCE OF ST. MARY

Capuchin Franciscans are a branch of the Franciscan Order, which was originally founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1209. In 1951 the Capuchin Franciscans of the Province of St. Mary purchased a large home on the western shores of Cayuga Lake, and the home became St. Fidelis Friary. In previous years, Capuchin
Franciscans ministered in hospitals and gave retreats at parishes within the diocese. Currently, two Capuchin Franciscans serve Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish in Interlaken, one as pastor and one as parochial vicar who also works in Hispanic ministry for the diocese.
CARMELITE FATHERS
The rst Carmelite Fathers were hermits on Mount Carmel in Palestine in the 12th century. In the 1870s and 1880s Carmelites began arriving in America. They have been serving in the Diocese of Rochester since at least the early 1940s, when they opened the Carmelite House of Studies in Auburn.
Several years later the Carmelites founded Mount Carmel High School in Auburn at the
request of Bishop James E. Kearney. After the high school closed in 1970 several of the priests began teaching at other schools, including Bishop Kearney High School, Nazareth Academy and McQuaid Jesuit High School. Over the years Carmelite priests also have assisted at parishes, schools and hospitals throughout Monroe County.
