Catholic Courier Newspaper evolves to meet information needs
The Catholic Courier has evolved continuously since Oct. 5, 1889, when three laymen produced 1,000 copies of The Catholic Journal’s debut edition, an oversized broadsheet bearing thousands of words on its front page and a single engraving of Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid.
Originally geared just toward Catholic residents of the Flower City, the weekly paper surveyed developments in the growing Diocese of Rochester, addressed lingering anti-Catholicism and reported news from Europe and U.S. cities where many Catholic immigrants had settled.
