In accordance with church law, Bishop Clark submitted his resignation on his 75th birthday, July 15, 2012, and several weeks later Syracuse Bishop Robert J. Cunningham was named apostolic administrator until a successor could be named.
On Nov. 6, 2013, Pope Francis named Bishop Salvatore R. Matano of the Diocese of Burlington, Vt., as ninth bishop of Rochester. He was installed on Jan. 3, 2014, at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
A native of Providence, R.I., Bishop Matano was ordained in Rome on Dec. 17, 1971. After ordination, he served as assistant pastor, Our Lady of Grace Parish, Johnston, R.I. (1972-73); faculty member, Our Lady of Providence Seminary High School, Providence (1972-77); diocesan director of the Priests’ Personnel Of ce for the Providence Diocese (1977-80); and assistant chancellor for the Providence Diocese (1978).
