Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s coat of arms combines his own coat of arms with that of the Diocese of Rochester. Bishop Matano’s coat of arms (at right) incorporates a Moline cross with forked ends and a seven-pointed star representing the seven sacraments, Our Lady’s seven sorrows and the seven hills upon which Rome and his home diocese of Providence, R.I, are said to have been built.
The seal of the Diocese of Rochester incorporates a saltire (x-shaped cross) and a crescent moon representing Mary Immaculate, patroness of the United States.
