Bishop James E. Kearney established Pen eld’s Church of the Holy Spirit on June 29, 1965, appointing Father Joseph Lynch as the founding pastor.
The parish’s rst Mass was celebrated in the auditorium of Our Lady of Mercy High School in Brighton, where liturgies took place for most of the next two years, with summer Masses
taking place at Bauman’s Farm in Webster.
In the fall of 1965, the parish community began a building drive, and construction on the church began the following fall. The building at 1355 Hatch Road was constructed entirely out of bricks and concrete blocks. Its interior featured exposed structural steel and a concrete oor, which attracted quite a bit of attention.
The rst Mass in the newly constructed church was celebrated on Palm Sunday, April 7, 1968. An open house and ecumenical service attended by leaders of other area churches followed the rst Mass.
A parish center named in honor of Father Frederick Bush – pastor from 1971 to 2001 – opened in 1990 and continues to be a site for community pro- grams.
Church of the Holy Spirit celebrated its 50th anni- versary on May 24, 2015.
