In August 30 1874
the the feast of of of Saint Rose of of of Lima the the cornerstone of of of a a a a new church dedicated to her honor was laid in Chesapeake City PPreparations had begun in in in in in in 1871 when one acre of of of of of of land was was purchased for for $475 in Chesapeake City 500 people gathered for for the blessing and establishment of of Saint Rose of of Lima as a a a a a a mission of Saint Francis Xavier commonly referred to as Old Bohemia the the the Mother Church of of the the the Diocese of of Wilmington The church was formally dedicated in in June of 1875 Saint Francis Xaver founded another mission in in in 1883 Saint Joseph in in in Middletown Together these three churches in 1890 reported 350 registered Catholics and a a a a yearly
income of $850 In 1908 Saint Saint Francis Xavier became a a a a a a mission of Saint Saint Joseph which was was named a a a a a a a parish and a a a a a a a rectory was was built in Middletown on Cochran Street At this time it took two-and-a-half hours to to get from Saint Saint Joseph to Saint Saint Rose travelling by horse and wagon but the priests readily did this to to serve those entrusted to to their care In February of 1955 two additional acres adjoining Saint Rose’s property were purchased In 1974 Saint Rose celebrated its centennial anniversary and the the Old Bohemia Council of the the Knights of Columbus was founded By 1963 the the parish census reported that there were 45 registered families families at at Saint Saint Rome of Lima Together with 120 families families at at Saint Saint Joseph the the parish had a a a a a total of of 571 people In the the Great Jubilee of of 2000 parish records indicate that there were 200 200 registered families at at Saint Saint Rose with another 1 1 100 at at Saint Saint Joseph A A newly-installed Allen organ was blessed at Saint Rose on September 5 2009 And in January of 2010 repairs were made to its steeple and roof 65
