CHAMPÉRY SKI TRIP
Leisure Development have been working with the Pupil Referral Units (PRU) over the past four years.
During this time the team has developed a number of outdoor and positive engagement activities to support the needs and well-being of these groups. The team has also been able to offer activities to support the young people including e-biking, bush craft, orienteering and water-skills courses.
The sessions reportedly improved behaviour and cohesion within the school and both services have ensured that the collaboration continued with positive outcomes being achieved. As a consequence other initiatives have developed including ski lessons being offered within the partnership between the PRU and the Leisure Development Team. Those who participate thrive in these group lessons, and it became apparent that most have never had the opportunity to attend a school ski trip. There were several reasons put forward for this, including a lack of funding/disposable income, challenging behaviour, not having a passport etc.
As the Swiss Ski Resort of Champéry has been twinned with Llandudno since 2022, the idea of developing a PRU ski trip with an add cultural/educational benefit, was proposed.
Following a number of meetings with local councillors and twinning representatives from both Llandudno and Champery,
the trip was arranged, and the group set off to Switzerland
in January. Skiing was not to be the only focus of the trip. The Twinning experience included an invitation to the opening and closing ceremony of the Welsh Alpine Ski Championships; visits to local farms and businesses and access to the local palladium for other sporting activities.
