BLUE SKIES, GREAT ROADS, AND BEAUTIFUL CARS
Due to the stifling effects
of the COVID-19 out- break, most if not all of
the KCRPCA events had been canceled or postponed well into 2020. As the public concerns eased and things opened up a little more, the club decided to hold a Saturday Drive on Saturday, July 11th. The required social distanc- ing protocols were incorporated, of course, and on event day the turn- out was...in short...fantastic. It may have been due to cabin fever, a pronounced lack of drive time, the ultimate destination being a winery, or a combination thereof, but the assembled crowd of cars and people was impressive – larger than most car shows of late. Ev- eryone was all smiles...you could tell even with the face masks. This was the first outing of the season and you could really feel how charged-up we all were to hit the road again.
The planned route took us up

KS Highway 5, a notably twisty two lane highway that winds through Wyandotte County north on its way to Leavenworth, KS. At the starting point in the lot of a Kansas City, KS Wal-Mart, Drive Chair Mike Rehak had everything organized: waivers were distributed and signed, directions were passed out, last minute trips to grab bottled water or whatever were made. When it was time

for the required drivers briefing, Mike climbed up a light pole in
the middle of the group as we all stared -- curious if he was going
to offer up an impromptu pole- dancing demo or if he suffered a pre-drive meltdown from the heat. {This was mid-July in the Midwest after all] In truth, Mike made

the climb to gain some height to better address the group. Too bad – we’re usually big tippers – he could have done well :-)
