As I wandered toward the dedicated Porsche section, a garage door clattered open to reveal the hidden service area. Here two technicians were preparing five legendary Brumos cars. These retired racers would later in the week be on track at the Rolex 24
at Daytona for a parade lap salute
to the history of Brumos. That weekend I observed those cars on track. Hurley Haywood was among the guest drivers, and he desperately wanted to engage the other four in more than just a slow-paced show. Revving his car’s engine, nudging forward then braking, Hurley wanted one more shot of adrenaline on the course at Daytona.
But back at the museum, the collection of racing Porsches captured my attention. A red Porsche car hauler, LeMans, IMSA and early SCCA competition Porsches ringed the floor. My mind would try to recall where and when I had watched on TV these monsters of their time. They were seen and heard howling down LeMan’s Mulsanne straight or diving off the high banks of Daytona, backfiring cannon shots, as squealing tires protested, before joining the twisty infield road course.
The next time you are near Jacksonville, make time to visit this small but impressive museum. It’s sort of hidden in the Florida jungle, but well worth the find.
See you, somewhere, on the road.
