in conjunction with a new clutch will cost about $2000.
Costing out Option B is a little more complicated. First, there are two failure rates. Cars from 1997 through 1999 have an IMS failure rate of under 1%. Cars from 2000 through 2005 have a reported failure rate of 8% (which I have to admit frightens me some). Second, you have the choice of rebuilding your engine ($10K) or getting a new crate engine from Porsche ($20K). Let’s consider the rebuild Option B1 and the crate engine Option B2.
Here’s where the math comes in. In order to get the expected cost of an option you need to consider the cost and the probability of an event happening. We already know the expected cost of Option A, $2000, which is $2000 for the replacement times the probability of doing it, which is 1.
For Option B, I think it’s easier
to see it as a probability tree
ENGINE REBUILD
CRATE ENGINE
Option A, replacing the IMS, is clearly the most expensive option ($2000), so, at least my natural cheapness has been vindicated. But, you’ll see that putting a crate engine into a post 2000 car gets close to that cost. This brings up a couple of things to consider.
