                 INSPIRING MODERN
MINDS
“At school you are engaged not so much in acquiring knowledge as in making mental efforts under criticism.A certain amount of knowledge you can indeed, with average faculties, acquire so as to retain... But you go to a great school not so much for knowledge as for arts and habits.”
(William Johnson Cory, 1823-1892)
An Androvian education is about developing a strong moral and intellectual character but true character only comes from experience. The way the staff and pupils have responded to the challenges of remote learning, of unfamiliar technologies, and of isolation – these have been character building experiences and so this period will come to define one’s mind far more than any item of information. Johnson Cory would be proud.
There is a tangible sense of community and togetherness at St Andrew’s and the bonds have only been strengthened through this year’s experience. Whether it was the staff taking themselves out of their comfort zones to sing an online version of Que Sera Sera or the pupils coordinating their own end of term message of appreciation to the tune of Abba’s Thank you for the Music (they substituted the word teaching for music), this year has made us all understand the importance of friendship. It is only by going through a period like this that we realise how much we rely on the support around us and St Andrew’s is a supportive and nurturing environment as the following pages will illustrate.
I am grateful to everyone who has put this publication together. Making notes, taking photographs and writing articles requires diligent dedication throughout the year from the staff body and at the helm is Katie Gent, our marketing manager, who has coordinated all the material superbly once again.
Finally, thank you to you the reader for whom we make this effort. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of the school this year. St Andrew’s Prep is a special place! Where Character is Made.
