                Frequently Asked Questions...
Does my child need to be registered to apply for any of the scholarships?
Yes.Your child must be registered with St Andrew’s Prep and the £75 registration fee received before the scholarship application closing date of Wednesday 20 January. However, only when the deposit of £750
is paid is a child committed to the school and their place confirmed. Deposits are required nine months before a child enters the school or just prior to a child joining if submitting a late registration.
What is a scholarship?
A scholarship is the recognition of excellence and academic potential, or potential in another field such as art, drama, music, performing arts or sport, following assessment by St Andrew’s Prep, Scholars receive a reduction on school fees and benefit from the school’s commitment to excellence in all areas of school life. The assessments are open to both external and internal candidates in certain age groups.
Which scholarship should my son or daughter apply for?
Some parents of external candidates take advice from their child’s current school, art, music, performing arts or drama teacher or sports coach. However, the Headmaster is happy to give general advice on this. Parents of external candidates can arrange either an individual appointment to visit the school or may attend an Open Event. Internal candidates should speak to the child’s form teacher/tutor, relevant staff member or the Headmaster. Candidates may apply for more than one discipline in the following fields: academic, art, drama, music, performing arts or sport with a maximum of three disciplines in total.
What is the difference between a scholarship and a bursary?
Both may give financial assistance but are different in their assessment.
Scholarships are given to pupils who have demonstrated excellence and ability in their chosen discipline regardless of their financial circumstances and are not means-tested.
Bursaries can be given in recognition of financial need and can be applied for by the family of any prospective pupil regardless of ability. The amount of a bursary award is treated on an individual basis , based on the parents financial circumstances.
Bursaries are means-tested, so parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstances form which is then assessed by the School’s Finance Director.
How much can scholarships be worth?
The majority of the scholarships will be between five and twenty percent of school fees although, in really exceptional circumstances, a higher award may be given. Should the fees still be unaffordable, a bursary can also be applied for although the larger of the awards will usually subsume the lower value award.
How many scholarships are awarded each year?
There is no fixed number of scholarships given in any discipline each year.
How will my child’s progress be monitored?
There is a tailored enrichment programme of support in place which is carefully monitored by the Head of Department or Deputy Head Academic. Records of Achievement are kept and teachers will discuss with a scholar their progress and targets at the beginning and end of each term.
If my child’s main sport is not one of the assessed sports, will this be taken into consideration?
Yes, candidates are asked to supply written evidence of non-assessed sports in the form of a reference from the coach and evidence of achievements.
